Before You Go

A few things to prepare before your first dispensary visit:

  • Bring a valid government-issued photo ID — driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID. You must be 21 years of age or older. Every customer is checked, every time.
  • Bring cash — While some dispensaries accept debit cards, cash is the most reliable payment method. Most locations have on-site ATMs, but fees can add up.
  • Know your limits — Minnesota allows up to 2 oz flower, 8g concentrate, or 800mg edibles per transaction.
  • Budget for taxes — Recreational cannabis is taxed at approximately 22–30% on top of listed prices. Medical patients pay 0% tax.
ID Is Required

Every customer at every Minnesota dispensary must show a valid government-issued photo ID proving they are 21 or older. This applies to both recreational and medical customers. No exceptions. Acceptable IDs include driver's licenses, state ID cards, passports, and military IDs.

Step-by-Step: Your First Visit

1. Check-In

When you arrive at the dispensary, you'll be greeted at the entrance where staff will verify your ID. At medical combination businesses, medical patients may have a separate check-in process or priority access. Once your age is confirmed, you'll be welcomed into the sales floor or waiting area.

2. Browse the Menu

Most dispensaries display their product menu on screens, tablets, or printed boards. Many also have products visible in display cases. Take your time looking at the options — there's no rush. You'll find a variety of product categories to choose from.

3. Consult with Staff

Dispensary staff (sometimes called budtenders) are trained to help you find the right product for your needs. Don't hesitate to ask questions, especially if you're new to cannabis. Good questions to ask include:

  • "What do you recommend for a first-time user?"
  • "What's the difference between these strains?"
  • "How long will this edible take to kick in?"
  • "What's the THC content in this product?"

4. Make Your Selection

Once you've decided, let the budtender know your selections. They'll prepare your order and verify it falls within purchase limits (2 oz flower, 8g concentrate, 800mg edibles per transaction).

5. Pay & Go

Complete your purchase at the register. Your products will be placed in a sealed, opaque exit bag. Keep this packaging sealed during transport — an open package accessible to a vehicle's occupants is a misdemeanor.

Purchase Limits

Medical patients may purchase up to a 90-day supply as determined by their healthcare provider. For full details, see Possession Limits.

Taxes & Pricing

Understanding the tax structure will help you budget for your visit:

Cannabis gross receipts tax 15% Recreational retail sales
State sales tax 6.875% Recreational retail sales
Local cannabis excise tax Up to 3% Where adopted by city/county
Local sales tax (varies) Varies Existing local rates

In practice, a $50 product will cost approximately $61–$65 after tax at a recreational dispensary, depending on location. Medical patients are fully exempt from cannabis taxes.

Payment Tips

Cash is king at Minnesota dispensaries. While some locations accept debit cards, many operate cash-only due to federal banking restrictions on cannabis businesses. Most dispensaries have on-site ATMs. To avoid ATM fees, bring cash from your own bank beforehand. Some dispensaries that accept cards may add a processing surcharge.

Tips for First-Timers

  • Start low, go slow — Especially with edibles. Begin with a low dose (2.5–5mg THC) and wait at least 2 hours before taking more.
  • Ask questions — Budtenders are there to help. There are no dumb questions, especially if you're new.
  • Don't drive impaired — Cannabis impairment is a DWI offense in Minnesota. Arrange a ride if you plan to consume.
  • Store securely at home — Keep cannabis in a locked space away from children and pets. You can store up to 2 pounds of flower at home.
  • Keep your receipt — It documents your legal purchase and the amounts bought.
  • Know where you can consume — Private residences (owned) are always legal. Smoking in apartments is banned. No public consumption. See Where You Can Consume.

Hours of Operation

Minnesota state law allows dispensaries to operate within an 8 AM to 2 AM window. Individual dispensaries set their own hours within this range, and local governments may impose additional restrictions. Always check your dispensary's posted hours before visiting, especially on holidays.
